A cramp in your neck is easy to brush off as nothing to worry about. However, long-term neck pain can impact your ability to work, turn your head, sleep, or even relax comfortably. If you have neck pain that doesn’t go away or that recurs frequently, it’s time to see a doctor.

Arctic Medical Center provides residents in and around Anchorage, Alaska with regenerative and holistic solutions for pain, including chronic neck pain. If your stiff, aching neck is preventing you from enjoying your daily life, we can help.

Common causes of neck pain

Sleeping wrong or sitting in an uncomfortable position can make your neck feel stiff and painful.

However, you can usually recover in a few hours or a day and get back to normal. More serious causes of neck pain need medical attention, and include:

Acute injury

An injury such as whiplash or a blow to the neck can inflame the muscles and tendons of your neck, causing pain and stiffness.

Disc pain

A herniated, slipped, or bulging disc can put pressure on the nerves in your spine, leading to stabbing neck pain.

If you have fibromyalgia, it can affect your neck, spine, and shoulders, causing chronic, debilitating neck pain.

TMJ disorder

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders don’t just affect the hinge of your jaw. The pain can radiate into your head, neck, and shoulders as well.

Long-term strain

If you spend a lot of your time at a desk or on your phone, the long-term strain of holding your head in a fixed position can cause neck pain and cramping that can worsen over time. This is often referred to as “tech neck.”

Treatment for neck pain

The treatment for neck pain will vary depending on the severity of your pain and the reason behind it. Your doctor may suggest things you can do at home to relieve stress on your neck, such as switching pillows for sleeping, and adjusting your workstation and schedule to allow for better posture and frequent breaks.

If your problem isn’t resolved, your doctor may recommend physical therapy and gentle exercises to reduce stress and tension in the neck. Chiropractic adjustment can realign your upper spine and help relieve pressure. Regenerative medicine can address more serious issues. We offer platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, which can promote healing in areas that have suffered damage.

Don’t shake off persistent neck pain. If your pain isn’t responding to rest and over-the-counter pain medication, one of our doctors can help you figure out why.
